The House of Representative on Friday advocated for more funding for the North East Development Commission to carry out more development projects to rebuild the region, the lawmakers also dismissed
allegations of lopsided projects distribution across the region by the Commission.
The Chairman House Committee on North East Development Commission (NEDC), Hon. Usman Zanna, said this in Bauchi during the Committee’s oversight functions on some ongoing projects by the Commission.
The lawmakers who arrived in Bauchi on Wednesday have inspected some projects of the Commission in the Bauchi-Gombe road, Kirfi-Abba-Gombe road, Mega School, constriction and equipping of Medical Emergency Complex and ongoing construction of Institute of Opthalmology Complex at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, the Commission's State Office amongst others.
Hon Zanna, while speaking on Friday, said that: “I want to clear the insinuation that the MD and the NEDC are only doing jobs in one particular area, by seeing this, we have to clear that insinuation. The MD is really working in all the states.
“I want to appeal to the Management of the Commission to collaborate with the House to look for more funding outside the government revenue, we have to think outside the box to go and look for more funding at the United Nations and other agencies of government.
“When we return to Abuja, we will discuss more and how to get more funds to continue this good work they are doing,” the lawmakers said.
While speaking, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Mohammed Alkali Goni said that the Commission as an Agency of the Federal Government decided to intervene on the roads as commuters suffer loss of lives and property yearly.
According to him, the Commission approached the Federal Ministry of Works to intervene in some portions of the roads. He said that the road which was awarded between Bauchi and Gombe states about 8 years ago. “We are agencies of the federal government and this is a federal road, we are doing this as a Commission to ease the pain of our people,” Alkali said.
