Gombe Deputy Governor Slams Federal Institutions' Fee Hike as 'Killing Education'

By Najib Sani, Gombe

In a scathing critique, Gombe State Deputy Governor, Manassah Daniel Jatau, has condemned the recent surge in school fees at federal tertiary institutions, calling it a devastating blow to education.

The deputy governor's remarks came during a meeting with the National Executive Council of the Gombe State Students Association (GOSSA) at his office.

Jatau expressed outrage over the Federal University of Kashere's drastic fee increase from N60,000 to N120,000, with plans to further hike it to N150,000.

He warned that this trend would disenfranchise students from poor backgrounds, effectively "killing education."

The deputy governor urged student unions nationwide to mobilize and present a united front against these hikes, ensuring that education remains accessible to all.

He highlighted state government's commitment to education, citing improved WAEC and NECO performance and the establishment of five mega schools to accommodate 3,000 students.

In response to GOSSA's concerns about the scholarship portal, Jatau assured the executives that he would investigate the issues and work towards reinstating the scholarships to alleviate students' financial burdens.

The meeting was attended by GOSSA's National President, Al'amin Mohammed Abubakar, Vice President Mohammed Taufik Aliyu, and Speaker Bashir Suleman, who appreciated the government's support, including the provision of a bus and appointments as Special Assistants on student affairs.
