Court dismisses suit against Bauchi NUJ 13 months after election, affirms Sa’idu

By Ishola Michael

The National Industrial Court sitting in Bauchi has on Monday upheld the election of the incumbent leadership led Umar Sa'idu of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) after 13 months of litigation.

Presiding Judge, Justice Mustapha Tijjani dismissed the case filed by three members of the Union, Abdulwahab Mohammed of VOA and two others, challenging the electoral process and the outcome of the May 2023 election. The Judge dismissed the suit for lacking merit.

Tijjani ruled that the allegations made by complainants on the election that produced the current leadership of the NUJ in Bauchi Council on violation of Constitution and non compliance with the due process was baseless.

He held that the petitioners failed to exhaust the internal mechanism of the Union in resolving disputes.

He therefore dismissed the case and affirmed the election result as declared by the Electoral Committee.

The complainants had earlier approached the State High Court where the case was dismissed on the ground of jurisdiction, saying that the matter is an industrial issue, the Court awarded N100,000 against the petitioners in favour of the defendants.
