A coalition of more than 2,600 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Bauchi State, alongside the Women Coalition for Sustainable Peace and Viable Democratic Gains and the Baheejah Mahmood Support Association (BAMASA), has endorsed Hajiya Baheejah Mahmood Abdullahi (Mai Dankwali) as the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) deputy governorship candidate to run alongside Senator Shehu Buba Umar.
In a statement issued in Bauchi, the coalition's spokesperson, Hajiya Halima Nuhu Mohammed, said the endorsement followed extensive consultations among member organisations.
According to her, the PRP's principles of justice, equity, accountability, inclusion and good governance align with the values championed by Senator Shehu Buba Umar and Hajiya Baheejah throughout their years of public service.
The coalition described Baheejah as a grassroots politician, women mobiliser and humanitarian who has dedicated her life to empowering women, youths, orphans and vulnerable groups across Bauchi State.
"Her years of selfless service in community development, peacebuilding, advocacy and humanitarian interventions have impacted thousands of lives across the state's 20 local government areas. We believe it is time for Bauchi State to reward such commitment with leadership," the statement said.
The groups expressed confidence that a Shehu Buba Umar/Baheejah Mahmood ticket would provide inclusive, people-centred leadership capable of promoting peace, sustainable development and good governance.
They also pledged to mobilise their members and supporters for peaceful democratic participation in support of the proposed ticket and urged civil society organisations, professional bodies, faith-based groups, women and youth associations to join the campaign for inclusive leadership.
Halima noted that Baheejah played a key role in the establishment of the Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable Children Agency during the administration of former Governor Isa Yuguda.
She added that consultations with PRP stakeholders across the state's northern zone showed broad support for Baheejah's nomination, saying her experience, grassroots connection and leadership qualities would strengthen the party and promote gender inclusion.
The coalition maintained that Baheejah possesses the competence, integrity and vision required to complement Senator Shehu Buba Umar, expressing confidence that her emergence as deputy governorship candidate would enhance the party's chances and strengthen governance if elected.
