By Khalid Idris Doya

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed Hon. Usman Adamu Sufi as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections in Bauchi State.

Sufi emerged as the party’s candidate during a special delegates congress held on Sunday at the Bauchi PDP Secretariat led by Abdulrahman Mohammed faction. The exercise was supervised by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The chairman of the PDP governorship and state Assembly primary election committee for Bauchi State, Yusuf Doma, said the exercise was conducted with delegates from the 20 local government areas of the state participating.

The primary election was conducted through voice votes and affirmation by delegates, who unanimously endorsed Usman Adamu Sufi as the party's governorship candidate, being the sole aspirant in the race.

Declaring the result, the Committee Chairman, Yusuf Doma, said "I, Yusuf Doma, having certified that Usman Adamu Sufi scored the highest affirmation through voice votes and fulfilled the requirements of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the PDP Constitution and electoral guidelines, hereby declare him winner of the primary election and the PDP governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections in Bauchi State."

Doma also announced that all PDP candidates for the State House of Assembly had been duly elected in their respective constituencies in line with the party's constitution and electoral guidelines.

He commended PDP members across the state for their loyalty and commitment to the party, expressing confidence that the PDP would record victory in all elections it contests in 2027.

In his acceptance speech, the PDP governorship candidate in Bauchi, Usman Adamu Sufi thanked the delegates for finding him worthy of the party's ticket, describing the endorsement as a great honour.

He also appreciated the leadership of the PDP at all levels for their continued support and confidence in his governorship ambition over the years, stressing that he possesses a strong political structure capable of winning elections.

Sufi expressed optimism that the PDP would secure victory in all elective positions in the 2027 general elections, considering what he described as the quality and strength of the party’s candidates.

The governorship candidate assured delegates and party supporters that, if elected governor in 2027, his administration would prioritise the education and healthcare sectors, which he described as critical to the development of Bauchi State.

Earlier in his remarks, the Bauchi State PDP Chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Kassim Toro said the party remains united, formidable and fully prepared for the 2027 general elections, citing its strong grassroots support base.

Toro commended delegates for their loyalty and urged members to embark on door-to-door campaigns across the state to mobilise more support for the party and its candidates ahead of the elections.

Recall that the Chairman of the Senatorial Primary Election Committee for Bauchi State, Alhaji Ali Ibrahim, had announced that Dabo Danjuma Adamu emerged as the party’s candidate for the Bauchi South Senatorial District through affirmation by delegates and party members

For the Bauchi North Senatorial District, he said two aspirants contested in a direct primary election. Abdulkadir Adamu secured 137 votes to defeat Maula Adamu Aliyu, who polled zero votes.

"Accordingly, Abdulkadir Adamu emerged as the duly nominated candidate of the party," Ibrahim stated.

He further disclosed that Bello Ibrahim emerged as the PDP candidate for Bauchi Central Senatorial District through affirmation.

Ibrahim explained that the primaries were conducted on May 20, 2026, in line with the party's constitution and the 2026 Electoral Guidelines.

"Following the screening and clearance of aspirants by the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, the duly cleared aspirants were presented to delegates and party members for affirmation and, where applicable, direct primaries were conducted in accordance with the Constitution of the Party and the Electoral Guidelines, 2026," he said.

He added that the exercise ended peacefully, with the committee officially declaring the successful aspirants as the party’s duly nominated candidates for the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

"On behalf of the members of the Committee, I congratulate all the successful candidates and wish them the very best in the forthcoming 2027 General Elections.

"I also sincerely thank the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party for the opportunity accorded to me and the other members of the Committee to serve in this important national assignment," he added.
