Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.
The announcement was made Monday night by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to Onanuga, Badaru conveyed his decision in a letter dated December 1 to President Bola Tinubu, stating that he was stepping down for health-related reasons.
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Badaru’s service to the country.
Onanuga added that the President is expected to notify the Senate of his nominee for a new Defence Minister later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, aged 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
His departure comes at a time the President has declared a national security emergency, with further details on its implementation expected soon.
