NAWOJ trains Journalists on Home Gardening in Bauchi

By Beatrice Gondyi

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi State Chapter, has conducted a one-day training session for women journalists in Bauchi on home gardening, aimed at improving household diets and enhancing food security.

The training, which was organized in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation, Rural Urban Women Green Initiative (RUGWI), was aimed at equipping women journalists with modern techniques in gardening.

Speaking during the event on Thursday, Mrs. Rashida Yusuf, Chairperson of NAWOJ Bauchi, said the training was designed to equip 40 participants with modern gardening techniques.

Yusuf praised the commitment of women to agricultural development in the state and recommended home gardening as a potential entry point into commercial agriculture.

In her remarks, Prof. Khadija Bello, Chairperson of RUGWI, explained that the non-profit organization seeks to raise awareness about agricultural practices while promoting nutrition and empowerment.

“We are committed to creating awareness and implementing practical agricultural practices—starting from peasant to commercial farmers,” she said.

A highlight of the training included a practical session on soil quality focusing on the various components and ingredients necessary for effective home gardening.

At the end of the training, the association distributed sacks, seedlings, and other gardening materials to all participants.
