Bauchi trains schools supervisors on effective data management

By Ishola Michael

Bauchi State Government has organised a 3-day training for 20 primary schools supervisors across the 20 local council area of the State on effective data management for quality service delivery.

The training was organised by Girls Education Mission International in collaboration with Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) with support from the TY Danjuma Foundation under the project title: Quality Education for Lifelong Learning (QELL) holding at the Smart School Bauchi.

Speaking on the essence of the workshop, Executive Director of Girls Education Mission International, Keturah Shamah said that the training is for school supervisors in the 20 LGAs of the State. “Last year we were here to training teachers of science and technology so that the two segments can blend for effective service delivery."

According to her, "We trained 30 Teachers last year and this year we are training 20 Supervisors, they are expected to work together and step down the trainings to others. Each person is expected to train 50 persons making a total of 2500 personnel to add value to the foundation of education in the State.

"The aim is to enhance quality of education in the State. You know the critical role of the Supervisor in ensuring the quality of education service delivery.

"We are training them on how to effectively supervise the Teachers as well as introduce to them a tool developed by UBEC, even though we discovered that they are not using the tool which is like a checklist of what they are expected to check. From the experience, they have not been using the tools," she revealed.

She stressed that, "Now that we have introduced it to them, we hope that they will start using it and ensure that the Teachers follow the checklist. After this training, we expect improvements in the Schools performance."

According to her, "We want to expose them to effective use of data to write reports, you know that Government depends on data to take informed decisions. The SUBEB Chairman will not sit in the office to know what school has what problems, it is the Supervisor that knows, the feedback is very essential."

She stressed that since it is the Supervisor that is in the field, he/she should be able to know what the school needs, does it need a fence for security or something else, the Supervisor needs to give accurate report.

The ED opined that the situation at the Schools are the way they are now because of the lack of effective supervision and inaccurate data information, stressing that the schools need effective supervision.

"We are here to strengthen the supervision role of the State in order to ensure that the data required was generated and presented for the right thing to be done to ensure quality. We will ensure that they got the right information during the training," she assured.

Keturah Shamah assured that after the training, there will be a follow up to ensure that the right thing was done saying, "We will present the outcome of the training to the State Government through SUBEB for validation."

One of the Supervisors from Toro LGA, Ummi Maikudi expressed happiness that she was chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the training saying that it has been a wonderful session.

According to her, "I have been a Supervisor since the past 2 years but this is the first training I am attending. I have learnt a lot of new things about supervision, my eyes have been opened to the importance and function of my roles in having a quality schools."

Ummi Maikudi who has Seven primary schools and over Fifty teachers under her supervision prmonised to put the outcome of the training into effective use as soon as possible.

She commended SUBEB for organizing the workshop which was an eye opener for her and her colleagues assuring that there will be a new era of schools supervision in the State henceforth.
