The Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) has arrested four individuals for violating environmental safety regulations by using tyres to process animal hides during the Eid-al-Adha festivities in the State.
The Director-General (DG) of BASEPA, Dr. Mahmud Bose, stated this in an interview with our Correspondent on Wednesday, in Bauchi.
He said the arrests were part of proactive measures to protect public health and the environment during the Eid-al-Adha festivities.
“The suspects, apprehended during routine surveillance, were found using tyres to burn animal hides, a practice banned due to its serious health and environmental implications.
“They are set to appear before a mobile court for prosecution today,” he said.
Dr. Bose stated that large quantities of contaminated meat were also confiscated and destroyed during the mass slaughtering that accompanies the Sallah celebrations.
"We banned the use of tyres as a measure to safeguard public health and the environment.
“Burning tyres releases harmful chemicals like dioxins and furans, which can lead to respiratory problems and long-term environmental damage," he explained.
He commended the general public for their compliance with the agency's regulations, describing the response as encouraging and a positive step towards sustainable environmental practices.
“We are committed to protecting the lives of the people and the integrity of the environment.“Using tyres to process animal skin is a dangerous practice that must be stopped” Dr. Bose said.
He emphasised BASEPA’s ongoing commitment to enforcing environmental laws and supporting public awareness campaigns.
The DG also lauded the media, agency staff, and community leaders for their vigilance and collaboration during the festive period.
Dr. Bose stressed that the agency's work includes air and water quality management, proper waste disposal, and reducing exposure to environmental hazards.
“All critical in reducing disease burden, improving quality of life, and supporting sustainable development., the DG said
